No Heating or Hot Water? Here’s What to Check First

Boiler not working? Don’t panic. In many cases, the fix is simpler than you think.

At ECO-GAS, we often get emergency calls for heating issues that could have been solved in minutes — if only people knew what to check. That’s why we created this quick guide to the 4 most common causes of a non-working boiler.

Step 1: Check the Power
Is the boiler completely dead? No lights or display? Check the power switch and your fuse box. Sometimes the issue is as simple as a tripped switch.

Step 2: Check the Thermostat
Make sure your thermostat is turned on and calling for heat. If it’s battery-powered, change the batteries.

Step 3: Check the Boiler Pressure
Look at your boiler’s pressure gauge. It should be between 1.0 and 1.5 bar. If it’s too low, you may need to top it up. (Watch our video on how to do that safely.)

Step 4: Try the Reset Button
Still nothing? Press and hold the boiler reset button for 3–5 seconds. That might restart the system.

When Not to DIY:
If you hear strange banging, see an error code, or smell gas — stop. That’s a job for a qualified Gas Safe engineer.
